Beware The Eyes of March

Did you know March is Workplace Eye Wellness Month? We recognize this by reminding employers and employees not only the importance of wearing certified eye protection but also, the importance of preventing Computer Vision Syndrome or Digital Eye Strain.

If you work in an environment with projectiles, chemicals, radiation or bloodborne pathogens, you should be wearing the proper protective eyewear that meets ANSI Z87 standards. Be sure your eyewear is in good condition and if damaged, replace immediately.

We live in a world of technology; Americans are spending an average of 8 hours a day on digital devices which has caused nearly 60 million people to suffer from Computer Vision Syndrome or Digital Eye Strain. Not only are people suffering from dry red eyes, blurred vision, double vision, eye irritation, headaches and back or neck pain, studies are suggesting the harmful effect of the blue light they transmit can cause retinal cell damage over time. As a result of this retinal cell damage, Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) can develop. There are no signs of early AMD however at the intermediate stage, you may notice mild blurriness in your central vision and trouble seeing in low light. If you start noticing difficulties seeing in low light or mild central blurriness, stop by our office located in Gilbert to pick up MacuHealth Supplements. These supplements are specially formulated and clinically proven to rebuild macular pigment resulting in enhanced visual performance and aid in the prevention of AMD.

There are some very simple steps you can take to help prevent all this. Get your workspace arranged properly. Set your monitor about 20 – 28 inches away from your face, slightly below eye level. If you are working with printed material, place a stand next to your monitor for ease and less head movement. Cut the glare!! Place your computer away from unnecessary sources of glare like windows and change surrounding lighting when possible. Come in and see Dr. Lee for an eye exam and order blue filtered eyeglasses with an anti-reflective coating. This is a great option as they not only help with glare and contrast but protect your eyes from harmful blue light. Adjust your monitors settings. They aren’t set in stone. We ‘re not all cut from the same cloth, adjust to your liking. Finally, give your eyes a break! Don’t forget the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes look away from the screen at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
Remember, 80% of what we learn every day comes through our eyes. You only get two in your lifetime. Protect these little gems!
